How to Export Revit to CAD (DWG)

Seven steps in Revit, or one sentence in Mira.

Do it with Mira
Quick answer

Click File tab › Export › CAD Formats › DWG. Pick an export setup, choose the current view or a set of views and sheets, and click Next. Pick a folder, the AutoCAD version and the naming, and click OK. The setup decides layers and units.

Or, just ask Mira, a free add-in, to export every floor plan to DWG.

The manual way

How to do it in Revit

  1. Step 1: Make an export setup

Click File tab › Export › Options › Export Setups DWG/DXF. Click New Export Setup, or duplicate one that's close, and name it for the job or the consultant (Autodesk Help: Modify DWG/DXF Export Setup).

  2. Step 2: Map categories to layers

On the Layers tab, use Load layers from standards to start from American Institute of Architects (AIA), ISO standard 13567, Singapore standard 83 or British standard 1192 (Autodesk Help: About Layer Mapping for Export). Then edit the layer name and color for any category; doors map to A-DOOR by default.

  3. Step 3: Set units and coordinates

On Units & Coordinates, set One DWG unit is, inches by default in imperial projects, and the Coordinate system basis: Project internal, or Shared to keep the project's shared position. Shared coordinates only work when you export views, not sheets (Autodesk Help: Units and Coordinates for DWG/DXF Exports).

  4. Step 4: Start the export

Click File tab › Export › CAD Formats › DWG and pick your setup under Select Export Setup. For one view, keep <current view/sheet only>; for several, choose <In session view/sheet set> and tick the views and sheets (Autodesk Help: Export to DWG or DXF).

  5. Step 5: Choose the folder, version and names

Click Next. In Export CAD Formats, browse to the folder, pick the AutoCAD version under Files of type and a Naming option, then click OK.

  6. Step 6: Choose xrefs or one file

With Export views on sheets and links as external references ticked, a sheet's views and any Revit or DWG links export as separate files that reference each other. Clear it to get a single file.

  7. Step 7: Reuse the setup on the next project

Export setups are saved in the project, not as a separate file. Copy one with Manage tab › Settings panel › Transfer Project Standards and tick DWG/DXF Export Setup Settings, or keep it in your template.

What to watch for

Only what's visible exports. Revit exports the objects visible in each view, so turn off categories in Visibility/Graphics or tighten the crop region to keep the DWG small. See how to hide and unhide elements.

View scale changes the linework. Revit exports a scaled 2D view: at 1:100, two lines 1/4" apart can come out as one, while at 1:20 they stay separate. Pick the scale for the precision the recipient needs.

Overrides need a layer rule. Export layer options on the Layers tab decide what happens to view-specific overrides: kept BYENTITY on the category's layer, dropped, or moved to new layers. Autodesk treats a link shown By Host View as an override.

Rooms can come out as polylines. Tick Room, space and area boundaries on the General tab to export room outlines from floor or ceiling plans as closed polylines, on a layer that's off by default in the DWG.

Going the other way? Bringing DWG details into Revit is covered in how to convert CAD details to Revit.

Export setups multiply. A project collects AIA, AIA (2) and an old structural setup, each mapping layers a little differently, and the DWGs that go out at each issue don't match the last set. Exporting every plan again for each transmittal adds more chances to pick the wrong one. That repeated export is the part an AI agent for Revit can take on, with you choosing the setup and the folder.

Or, just ask Mira to do it.

Export every floor plan to DWG with our AIA export setup, into a folder I'll pick.

Mira lists the floor plans and the DWG export setups saved in the model, and opens a folder picker instead of guessing a path. The export runs through a small tool Mira writes, which asks Allow first. Exporting writes files only, so nothing in the model changes.

In Revit, click File tab › Export › CAD Formats › DWG, pick an export setup and the views or sheets, then choose a folder and the AutoCAD version. Open the DWG files in AutoCAD.

Export it from Revit as DWG first, with File tab › Export › CAD Formats › DWG. Each view or sheet you export becomes its own DWG file.

In the DWG Export dialog, set Export to <In session view/sheet set> and tick the sheets. Save Set & Close keeps that selection and the settings without exporting.

Layers come from the export setup. In Export Setups DWG/DXF, open the Layers tab, load a standard such as AIA, and edit the layer name and color for each category.

Export views on sheets and links as external references was ticked, so a sheet's views and each link became separate files. Clear it in Export CAD Formats to get a single file.

Export it like any other view, and Revit writes the 3D model itself. For a flat 2D version, place the 3D view on a sheet and export the sheet.
