How to Install and Manage Revit Plugins

Seven steps in Revit, or one sentence in Mira.

Do it with Mira
Quick answer

Install a Revit plugin, or add-in, from Autodesk's Design and Make Marketplace or its maker's installer, then start Revit. Its tools appear on the Add-Ins tab or its own tab. Turn add-ins off in Add-Ins Manager on the Manage tab (2025.3 and later).

Or, just ask Mira, a free add-in, to replace a product name in every text note.

The manual way

How to do it in Revit

  1. Step 1: Check that it supports your Revit version

An add-in loads only in the Revit versions it was installed for, because each version reads its own add-ins folder (Autodesk Help: Registration of add-ins). Before you download, check that the developer lists your exact version: 2025, 2026 or 2027. Revit LT doesn't support add-ins at all (Autodesk Help: Install Add-Ins).

  2. Step 2: Download the installer

For an add-in from another developer, search the Autodesk Design and Make Marketplace and filter by Revit and your version, or get it from the developer's own site. Revit Help still calls the Marketplace the Autodesk App Store.

For one of Autodesk's own add-ins, sign in at manage.autodesk.com, click View Details on the Revit card, pick the tab for your Revit version and click Extensions under Available Downloads (Autodesk Help: Install Add-Ins).

  3. Step 3: Run the installer, then start Revit

Run the installer, follow its prompts, then start Revit. The installer puts a small .addin manifest file, which tells Revit what to load, in one of the folders Revit reads at startup (Autodesk Help: Add-in Registration).

For your Windows user only, that folder is %APPDATA%\Autodesk\Revit\Addins\2025 (or 2026, 2027). For all users, it is C:\ProgramData\Autodesk\Revit\Addins\2025 (or 2026) in Revit 2025 and 2026, and C:\Program Files\Autodesk\Revit\Addins\2027 in Revit 2027. Marketplace apps install as a .bundle folder under ApplicationPlugins instead (Autodesk: Revit publisher guidelines).

  4. Step 4: Answer the security prompt

Revit checks an add-in's digital signature before loading it and asks you to confirm one that isn't from Autodesk. For an unsigned add-in, Always Load stops the question for that file in that location, Load Once loads it this time only and Do Not Load skips it (Autodesk Help: Security: Unsigned File or Add-In). For an add-in signed by another publisher, Always Load trusts every file signed with that publisher's certificate.

If Revit reports an Invalid Signature, don't load it: the file may have been altered or corrupted, or its certificate revoked. Get a fresh copy from the publisher.

  5. Step 5: Find its tools on the ribbon

Look on the Add-Ins tab, between Manage and Modify (Autodesk Help: Install Add-Ins). Simple commands sit in its External Tools drop-down. Add-ins with their own panels put them on the Add-Ins tab, the Analyze tab or a tab of their own (Autodesk Help: Ribbon Panels and Controls); a Marketplace app with several panels gets a tab named after the app.

  6. Step 6: Turn add-ins on or off

In Revit 2025.3 and later, click Manage tab › Extensions › Add-Ins Manager. Check or clear single add-ins, all of them or macros, then click OK. Changes take effect the next time Revit starts, and they apply to your Windows user only (Autodesk Help: Add-Ins Manager).

The list also shows each add-in's last load time, useful when Revit is slow to start. An item with a lock icon was locked by an administrator with the (Admin) Add-Ins Manager (2025.4 and later) and can't be changed here (Autodesk Help: (Admin) Add-Ins Manager).

If an add-in stops Revit from starting, run Revit Add-Ins Manager from the Windows Start menu and switch it off there.

  7. Step 7: Track down an add-in that causes problems

Autodesk's routine: in Add-Ins Manager, click Disable all Add-ins, click OK and restart Revit. If you open cloud models (BIM 360 Document Management or Autodesk Docs, called Forma Data Management in the Revit 2027 help), clear the check mark at the top of the column instead, then recheck Autodesk Collaborate so cloud features keep working (Autodesk Support: How to disable add-ins for Revit).

If the problem goes away, turn add-ins back on one at a time or in small groups, Autodesk's own first, until it returns. If it started recently, start with the add-in you installed or updated most recently. Update the culprit, and if the problem survives the update, contact its maker (Autodesk Support: Check if add-ons are causing unexpected behavior in Revit).

What to watch for

On Revit 2025 before the 2025.3 update, there is no Add-Ins Manager. Autodesk's manual method: close Revit, move the add-in files out of C:\ProgramData\Autodesk\Revit\Addins\2025 (and the per-user and ApplicationPlugins folders, if they hold any), then start Revit. For cloud models, leave Autodesk.Collaborate.addin, ExportViewSelectorApp.addin and the ExportViewSelectorAddin folder in place (Autodesk Support: How to disable add-ins for Revit).

Revit 2027 moved the all-users add-ins folder to C:\Program Files\Autodesk\Revit\Addins\2027 and no longer looks under ProgramData (Autodesk Help: Registration of add-ins). An installer built before the move can put its file where 2027 never reads it, so get the developer's 2027 build.

Check add-ins after Revit updates, not just upgrades. Revit 2025 moved add-ins to .NET 8, so older ones had to be rebuilt, and Revit 2027 runs on .NET 10 (Autodesk Help: Migrating Revit to .NET 10). Autodesk also scheduled updates moving Revit 2025 and 2026 to .NET 10 (2026.5 first) and says add-ins affected by .NET 10's breaking changes must be recompiled. Test your add-ins on each update before your firm installs it.

Grayed-out buttons aren't always a fault. Revit enables add-in commands only when no other command or edit mode is active, so finish or cancel (Esc) what you're doing first. Developers can also hide a command in the Family Editor or when no model is open, or gray it out where it doesn't apply (Autodesk Help: Add-in Registration).

At firm scale add-ins drift. Each Revit version has its own add-ins folder, and Add-Ins Manager settings are per Windows user, so two people on one project can have different tools loaded. A new Revit version starts with only what someone installed for it. The (Admin) Add-Ins Manager (2025.4 and later) lets a BIM manager lock add-ins on or off with one settings file per Revit version. For repetitive edits, such as replacing a product name in every text note, the AI agent for Revit works differently from a button: you ask in plain words, it shows what it will change and nothing is written until you confirm. Pirros in Revit puts your firm's details and families from past projects in a sidebar inside Revit.

Or, just ask Mira to do it.

An add-in, often called a plugin, is a program built on the Revit API that adds commands and tools to Revit. Revit finds each one through a small .addin manifest file and loads it at startup. Autodesk makes some add-ins; other developers give theirs away or sell them.

Each Revit version reads .addin files from a per-user folder, %APPDATA%\Autodesk\Revit\Addins\2025 (or 2026, 2027), and an all-users folder. That is C:\ProgramData\Autodesk\Revit\Addins\2025 (or 2026) in Revit 2025 and 2026, and C:\Program Files\Autodesk\Revit\Addins\2027 in Revit 2027. Marketplace apps install to an ApplicationPlugins folder instead.

Check that it is installed for the Revit version you opened, since each version reads its own add-ins folder, and that it is checked in Add-Ins Manager (Manage tab, Revit 2025.3 and later). Revit also skips an add-in if someone clicked Do Not Load at its security prompt. Revit LT doesn't run add-ins at all.

In Revit 2025.3 and later, open Add-Ins Manager on the Manage tab, clear the add-in's check box, click OK and restart Revit. If the add-in stops Revit from starting, run Revit Add-Ins Manager from the Windows Start menu instead. Disabling removes nothing: to uninstall an add-in, remove it from the list of installed apps in Windows, as Autodesk advises.

Autodesk's own add-ins are under Extensions on the Revit page of your Autodesk Account (manage.autodesk.com). Other developers' add-ins are on the Autodesk Design and Make Marketplace, which Revit Help still calls the Autodesk App Store, or on their own sites. Check that an add-in lists your Revit version before you install it.
